Ridiculing those who wear proper hijab or niqaab...

As-Salamo Aleikom

Fatwaa from Sheikh 'Abdul 'Aziz Ibn 'Abdullah Bin Bazz (Rahimahullah)

From his book 'Islamic Fatwas regarding Women' Page nr 259

Question: What is the ruling concerning one who ridicules those who wear the proper hijab and cover their faces and hands?

Response:

"Whoever ridicules a Muslim woman or man for sticking to and applying the teachings of Islam is a disbeliever. This is regardless of whether it is concerning woman's hijab or any other matter of the Shariah. This is based on the following narration from ibn Umar:

At a gathering during the Battle of Tabuk, one man said, "I have not seen anyone like our Quranic readers who is more desirous of food, more lying in speech and more cowardly when meeting the enemy." A man said, "You have lied and you are a liar. I shall definitely tell the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu 'alayhi wa salam) about that." That news was conveyed to the Messenger of Allah and the Quran was revealed. Abdullah ibn Umar added, "I saw the man holding on to the bag of the camel of the Messenger of Allah and the dust was striking him while he was saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, we were just joking and playing. The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu 'alayhi wa salam) was simply saying the verse of the Quran:

"Was it Allah, and His Signs and His Messenger you were mocking? Make no excuse, you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others among you because they were sinners" (al-Tauba 65-66)

So ridiculing believers has been equated with ridiculing Allah, His Signs and His Messenger."

I made this post because, unfortunately, there's many brothers and sisters who happen to ridicule and mock the sisters who wear proper hijab or niqaab. Put in mind this hadith and this verse of the Qur'an so that next time you see a sister, you won't be tempted to mock or ridicule or even insult. I say this also for the brothers/sisters who don't give salaams to a sister in niqaab. This happened not only with me, but with another sister I know. And for what I see, it is becoming widespread, especially in Muslim majority countries where it shouldn't happen at all. When I came to Egypt, I felt free since I didn't have my family to keep me away from my Islamic duties and I decided to wear niqaab. For my own surprise, when that feeling of happiness was in my heart, knowing that I was pleasing Allah (subhanahu wa ta'la), I got hurt to see sisters at the masjid I was going to pray one day, ignoring me and my salaams, and it didn't happen once, I had more experiences like that. I thought at first that the sisters weren't hearing or something else got their attention, then, I clearly knew a group of sisters heard me saying salaam, they looked at me and turned their faces away without a single salaam back. SubhanAllah, how low can the Ummah fall? I'm a Muslim, it's obligatory for you to return my salaams. I felt sad and I make du'a that those sisters who do this come to know the truth and the ruling on giving salaams to any Muslim.

It is sad to hear that this things happens to many muslimah. People should have been more careful on the things they are saying against Muslim women. This people had feelings and are affective when someone mock them and turn them down.

this is true... we have made false standards of our society...

Muslim majority countries have extreme problems in their society and those problems are not caused by religion as some might think... They are actually caused by ignorance regarding their own religion and by cultural practices that go against Islam. subhanAllah

Asalam waliykum its a two way street sister.

I used to wear western clothes with a head scarf when i first started to practice. And whenever i would give salams to Niqabi sisters i would get a dirty look. They would stare at me like an alien as to say "How dare you say salam to me". I was not dressed in jilbab or niqab and therefore my salams were not accepted. So i have experienced it with sisters who wear niqab but i would never say all niqabi sisters are that way. Just a few i met... but also sisters in Niqab like to say we non niqabis will go to hell! authobillahi... i have heard some sisters say this. I now wear Jilbab covering the awrah as Allah and muhammed SAW requested, covering everything with outer garment apart from Hands and face. So why would i go to hell for doing the fard??

So its deffo' a two way street. We non niqabis get a bashing from those who wear niqab.

wa aleikom al salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I guess I talked more on the Muslim majority country's side than what happens in non-Muslim majority countries. But I definitely agree with you. No one knows who is going to Hell or not, only Allah knows.
Some sisters, like myself, think niqaab is fard. There's a difference of opinion among the scholars, so how should we expect people to be in consensus regarding this? This is how I think. I do not say the sisters showing their face and hands are sinners. They follow a valid opinion just like me.

Another thing I would like to point out is that muntaqibat (niqabis) in the West usually go through a loooot of pressure from both Muslims and non-Muslims and this can make them more defensive, so, I would advise sisters to try to understand a little bit from both sides of the story.

On the other hand, I've been noticing some harshness from converts who adopt a certain group's ideals, even converts living in Egypt. Islam preaches balance and Allah loves kindness and gentleness, therefore I do not support any harsh treatment to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

jazaki Allahu Khairan for commenting sis =)
